Military vs Cancer Kingston Park Armed Forces rugby event raised more than £48,000!
A crowd of 2,500 attended the stadium for two matches between the UK Armed Forces and select North of England teams
Military vs Cancer’s event marked the start of Armed Forces Week 2024 with a military address on the importance of the week and the impact for families associated with the military. A fusilier’s band performed before both matches, and an U12 game at half-time saw Bishop Auckland RFC take on Houghton RFC and Hartlepool RFC, as well as a range of stalls from the Navy, Army, RAF and sponsors.
Assistant director of Rugby Cesca Johnson-Harding said: "It was the start of a new era for the women of the North East who wore the North East Select colours with pride and really showcased just how much we need an elite level game in the North. What an amazing day raising awareness of this gap in playing provision and raising money for a worthy charity like Military v Cancer.

This year we are returning to Kingston Park with the very best rugby teams that the military can offer and will once again put the military, in particular locally based units, on display in this magnificent venue. United Kingdom Armed Forces RFC men’s and women’s teams will take on North of England Select XV on 22nd June and this time we are aiming for a crowd in excess of 5000.
UK Armed Forces Rugby is a team made up of the best players from across the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force that represents the British Armed Forces. Following on from its success in the men’s game last year, this event is set to be the biggest community Rugby event in the North, if not the UK in 2024. This event will play host to the Northeast Women’s XV – which is of national significance, since the region lost its only Premiership club. This flagship game puts aspirational players back in the spotlight as they seek to expand their rugby careers while supporting this MvC Armed Forces Day event and a game at the very top of the amateur pathway.
This is a huge event at a magnificent venue that highlights the Military and the people that serve. A flypast, parachute event, military displays and a marching band will enhance the day and give the event an additional military aspect.

Women’s XV’s go head-to-head against UK Armed Forces Rugby teams – made up of the best players from the Royal Navy, British Army and the Royal Air Force – at Kingston Park, our region’s premier rugby venue.
