Military vs Cancer | By Sea, Land, Air and All, together let’s make cancer fall
May saw the much anticipated return of Military vs Cancer’s Peak District Challenge — a three-day fundraising feat, geared to raise funds for military personnel suffering the effects of cancer, and their families.
As well as taking to the Derbyshire Dales for a scenic, 22-mile hike, 46 willing participants enjoyed a series of canoe-based head-to-heads on the waters at Manvers Lake in Rotherham. Acting as a central hub for fundraisers, Bakewell’s Thornbridge Outdoors made for a picturesque retreat to wind down in the evenings too. And, as if by magic, an early summer sun beamed down for the occasion.
With a donation tally that now sits an impressive £16,000 higher (and growing) than before the event, we’re incredibly grateful for our event sponsors — Edward Thomas Contractors, Encyclis, and Submariners Association — as well as attendees, and supporters, for taking us one step closer to opening a respite holiday lodge for our charity’s beneficiaries.
Not to mention Graeme McCabe, committee member, for pulling together another meticulously organised event, our mountain leaders for keeping the hiking collective safe, and our hosts for providing such stunning locations for the weekend.
David Bathgate, founder and chairman, offers a concluding comment on the success and resonance of our 2024 Peak District Challenge: “At Military vs Cancer, we are the people in the middle who see the very best and very worst of what we do. We see so many people putting themselves out to support our cause and raising thousands of pounds in the process, at a time when every moment is so precious. Meanwhile, we also witness firsthand the reasons why that money is raised, extending our support wherever we are able.
“Thank you all for being there to support us, whether you’re a face from the past or a friend we’ve made in the process.”
