Following the success of its inaugural rugby event last year, Military vs Cancer returned to Newcastle’s Kingston Park stadium with an even bigger and better celebration this month. Marking Armed Forces Day 2024 on Saturday 22 June, our charity sought to raise as much awareness and funds as possible for military families facing the effects of cancer.
Generously supported by lead sponsor ESH Construction, as well as a host of various local businesses, the event attracted a substantial crowd – drawing more than 2,300 attendees in total. Now, with a substantial £48,000 added to the fundraising tally, Military vs Cancer can help bring a wider range, and greater quality, of tailored support services to its dependents.
The official opening of the event was conducted by Lord Mayor Dunn of Newcastle, who raised the flag alongside Commodore John Aitken RN, Lieutenant Colonel Andy Black, Ammar Mirza CBE, and WO1 Gareth Evans.
But the main attraction was the rugby itself. These head-to-head matches featured elite men’s and women’s teams from the North of England Select XV and the UK Armed Forces Rugby teams, comprising the best players from the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force. As well as a double win for the UKAF teams, standout players included Vereimi Qorowale and David Fairbrother – named player of the match for his exceptional performance.
It wasn’t just thrilling sports activities that made the event one to remember, though. The day was also packed with military displays, a flypast, merchandise stands, food and drinks concessions, and so much more.
“The support we’ve received this year has been incredible,” says founder and chairman, David Bathgate, who set up the charity after losing eight loved ones to cancer in just two years. “I know firsthand the difference our military community can make on those battling with the devastation of cancer. To see so many people rally together to not only raise funds, but help build a community of support and empowerment, is what our mission is all about.
“We’ve set a high bar, and are eager to let that continue. With the momentum gained from this year’s event, plans are already underway to make it even more impactful in 2025.”
